The unofficial start of Pitt's basketball season will take place today in New York. Presumably, Providence was all booked up.
Pitt was voted to finish fourth in the conference in the annual preseason poll, behind Syracuse, UConn and Louisville. They received no first place votes, but there's a wide gap between Pitt and the rest of the top four over the number five team, Marquette. It's tough to argue with those results, although I think Pitt might be better than Louisville but both teams have question marks (rebounding for Louisville, number two scoring threat for Pitt). I'm interested in the expectations for Pitt this season, but I'm pressed for time today, so maybe we'll look at that tomorrow.
Not a huge surprise, but Ashton Gibbs was named the preseason Player of the Year. There's so much talent in the Big East, so I'm sure Gibbs is honored. If Gibbs can stay healthy, he should be the front-runner all season long.
As we listen to Jamie Dixon's endless interviews today, here's what may be his first national interview:
The actual play-by-play of the shot below the fold.
Welcome back, basketball.
